Water retention area fits in the landscape

After five years of planning and preparation, the realization of the water retention area is a fact. In October 2013 this area was officially opened by Pieter Kruiswijk, member of the Water board of the region of Amsterdam. In 2009 Brons and partners gave her advice about the environmental aspects of this water retention area. Important goals were to combine the water retention function with the replantation of trees, the development of several ecological gradients and small recreation facilities. Also the agricultural and open character and pattern of the parcels had to come back in the design. On this base landscape architect Ykema made the design.

At the opening day the guests were taken for a tour by Ellen Wilms Landscape Architect from Brons and partners on the project scene. During the walk several elements of the design, the water management , the plantation and the proposed maintenance plan were introduced and explained by Ellen Wilms. It seems to be that the area will fulfill his function as water retention very well in combination with the proposed nature development. Local people know how to find the path. Now it needs good maintenance to develop this function in a sustainable way for the future.
